English - how the pandemic changed the way we see our faces
1. Warmer
a. The purpose of this activity is to enable students
to make predictions about the text after reading
the headline.
2. Key words
a. Ask students to do the exercise individually and then
compare their answers in pairs or small groups. Note
that ‘anxious’ and ‘distressed’ are similar in meaning
but while ‘anxious’ means ‘very worried’, ‘distressed’
has the added meaning of being very unhappy and
very upset.
3. Comprehension check
a. Ask students to work individually to answer the questions and then compare their answers in pairs or small groups. The answers given are not the only possible answers. For example, in #6 students may say ‘He stopped at mirrors.’ Note that students may understand ‘He stopped to look at mirrors’ to mean ‘He stopped looking at mirrors’, which has the opposite meaning and is a very common learner error.
4. Discussion
a. Allow students time to note down their ideas and encourage them to say why they like or dislike online meetings.
5. In your own words
a. Students finish these statements about the people in the text in their own words.
